José María Cassant (1878–1903)

Cistercian priest

Trappist monk and French priest, José María Cassant achieved sainthood through humble perseverance in the midst of great limitations.

Biography

His poor memory seriously hindered his studies, but he found a teacher at the abbey of Santa María del Desierto who helped him love Jesus and advance step by step. He was ordained a priest in 1902 and peacefully offered the sufferings of tuberculosis that soon prevented him from celebrating Mass. He died at the age of twenty-five with his heart set on Christ.
