José Samsó y Elías, priest and martyr (1887–1936)

Catalan priest and parish priest of Mataró, José Samsó stood out as a catechist, spiritual director and pastor close to the sick and imprisoned.

Biography

Ordained in 1910, he put his intelligence and energy at the service of Christian formation, humbly adapting to the needs of his parishioners. At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War he was persecuted by his ministry. Arrested and condemned without trial, he forgave those who were going to shoot him and asked to die looking straight ahead, with his hands free to bless them. He gave his life on September 1, 1936.
