José Sánchez del Río (1913–1928)
Martyr
A Mexican teenager and martyr of religious persecution, José Sánchez del Río remained faithful to Christ the King until death.
Biography
Born in Sahuayo, he wanted to accompany the Cristeros to serve as standard bearer and help with simple tasks. Captured in 1928, he was imprisoned in his own parish, pressured to renounce his faith, and forced to witness the death of another young man. They wounded his feet and took him to the cemetery. He forgave his executioners and died proclaiming: “Long live Christ the King! Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!
Practical advice
Repeat today “Long live Christ the King!” in the face of a temptation to deny with your works what you profess.
