José Vaz (1651–1711)
missionary priest
Indian priest and great missionary from Sri Lanka, José Vaz entered the island clandestinely when the Catholic faith was persecuted and there were no priests left.
Biography
Disguised and living in extreme poverty, he sought out dispersed communities, celebrated the sacraments and trained catechists. During an epidemic he cared for the sick without distinction, earning respect even among those who suspected him. He organized a lasting missionary network and sought to express faith without confusing it with colonial interests. He died after twenty-four years of apostolic dedication.
