December 4
Juan Calabria
Priest
He was born in Verona Italy on October 8, 1873 to a very poor family.
Biography
With many difficulties but with the help of his parish priest he was ordained a priest at the age of 27. On November 26, 1907, he opened a home for helpless children and adolescents, with the help of men who, leaving everything behind, wanted to follow Christ in caring for the most needy of the time. This was the seed of the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence, and also of the Poor Sisters Servants of Divine Providence. The spirit that the Lord infused into the Work is to witness and rekindle faith and trust in Divine Providence in the world, educating children and young people, cultivating vocations for the Church, caring for the sick, elderly and poor, and taking on poor parishes. He died on December 4, 1954, he was beatified by John Paul II on April 17, 1988 in Verona and by the same Pope he was canonized in Rome on April 18, 1999.
