Juan de Brito (1647–1693)
Martyr
Portuguese Jesuit and missionary in India, Juan de Brito learned the local languages and customs and adopted an austere lifestyle to announce the Gospel with closeness.
Biography
His work produced numerous conversions, but also opposition and persecutions. Having temporarily returned to Portugal, he chose to return to the Madurai mission. He was arrested and beheaded in 1693 for remaining faithful to Christ. His inculturation taught that evangelizing requires respecting the people, sharing their lives and presenting the faith without seeking protection or privileges.
Practical advice
Listen respectfully today to the history and customs of someone other than yourself before speaking to them about your convictions.
