January 6
Juan de Ribera (†1611)
Bishop
He was a man totally detached from his assets, which he distributed among the poor.
Biography
When he was appointed Archbishop of Valencia, he got up at 4 A.M. and the entire morning was dedicated to praying, meditating, saying the Holy Mass slowly and devoutly, reading the Gospel and preparing his sermons. From noon until late at night, he attended to his archbishopric affairs, and the people always found his door open for whatever was offered to them. He liked to confess the faithful and teach catechism to children himself.
Practical advice
When you begin your work, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests and begin again with humility if it does not go well.
