Juan Nepomuceno (1350–1393)

Martyr

He was born in the village of Pomuk, in Bohemia, in 1350.

Biography

His name is derived from his hometown of Nepomuk or Pomuk. He studied at the University of Prague. Son of a judge, at the age of 20 we find him as a clergyman in Prague, with the title of "notary of the ecclesiastical court." Due to his theological and legal knowledge, he received different positions and honors, until reaching the dignity of vicar general of Archbishop of Prague, in 1389. During his free time from his delicate position, he gave himself completely to the pastoral care of humble people. Known for his simple lifestyle, he had a special love for those marginalized by civil power. King Wenceslas, the court and many nobles committed countless abuses of power, theft and violence against them. Because of this, the king was excommunicated and he, in revenge, had Saint John arrested and tortured, and was subsequently thrown from the Prague bridge. He died as a martyr for obeying God more than men, in 1393. Saint John Nepomuk is the main patron saint of Bohemia. He is invoked above all against floods and slander, and in favor of good confession.
