John Sarkander (1576–1620)
Martyr
A Moravian priest at a time of violent religious and political conflict, John Sarkander was falsely accused of collaborating with enemy forces.
Biography
Arrested, he suffered cruel torture to force him to reveal what he heard in confession and to implicate other people. He remained silent, faithful to the sacramental seal and his conscience, until he died from his wounds. His martyrdom does not justify the rivalries of his time; Rather, it reveals the dignity of a conscience that does not bow down to violence or use sacred information to save itself.
