Juan Teófano Vénard (1828–1861)

Blessed John Theophane Vénard (1828-1861) This young priest of the Foreign Missions was beheaded in North Vietnam, after having spent sixty days cowering inside a wooden cage.
Biography
They threw his head into the river, from where it was pulled out thirteen days later. Juan Teófano never lost his enthusiasm and joy: "Courage is needed in life. Long live joy!" he frequently repeated, even in the most tragic moments. He discovered his vocation by reading the Annals of the Propagation of the Faith while tending the cows of his father, a modest farmer.
