July 19

Justa and Rufina (+287)

Martyrs

Patronesses of Seville, Spain, were two potter sisters.

Biography

It is said that one day a man entered his store asking for donations for a pagan idol. They flatly refused to give it to him and proclaimed that only Christ was worthy of sacrifices. They broke the idol of the beggar who, in turn, broke all their vessels. Brought before the governor, they were sentenced to death. Justa died in prison and Rufina was taken to the lions. As the animals became tame before the martyr, it was decided to behead her and burn her corpse.

Practical advice

During this day, ask for strength to be loyal to Christ in difficulties with external order and internal recollection.
