June 1
Justin, martyr
Martyr
(+ 165) Layman and Christian apologist born in Samaria.
Biography
Saint Justin belonged to a pagan, non-Jewish family and although we do not know much about his life, we can affirm that his career has a lot in common with that of Saint Augustine since both were intelligent, pagan and with a burning desire to know the true God. He attended pagan and Christian schools since he always sought the truth and was not satisfied with the first news he received. After converting to Christianity, he opened a school of philosophy in Rome. Around 150 he wrote a book in which he discussed with the Jews and also addressed an apology for the Christians to the Emperor Antoninus Pius. A colleague denounced him and then he openly professed the Christian faith and was sentenced to death in the time of Marcus Aurelius.
Practical advice
As an offering to the Lord, calmly defend a truth that others prefer to remain silent, remembering that holiness is built in the ordinary.
