Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena (1874–1949)

Colombian nun and first saint born in that country, Laura Montoya dedicated her life to the respectful evangelization of indigenous peoples.

Biography

A teacher by profession, she knew the marginalization in which they lived and understood that her vocation led her to share their existence. In 1914 she entered the jungles of Antioquia with a small group of women and founded the Missionaries of Mary Immaculate and Saint Catherine of Siena. He learned local customs, defended the dignity of the indigenous people and united catechism, education and human promotion. For the last nine years, limited by illness, she continued to guide the work from a wheelchair.
