Lazarus Devasahayam Pillai (1712–1752)

Indian layman and martyr, Lazarus Devasahayam Pillai was born in a Hindu family and held a position in the service of the kingdom of Travancore.
Biography
After learning the Christian faith, he received baptism and took the name Devasahayam, which means "God helps." His conversion led him to proclaim the equality and dignity of all before God, which provoked hostility from the authorities. He was imprisoned, tortured and put on public display for years to force him to renounce Christ. He remained faithful until he was shot on January 14, 1752.
