Liberato Weiss, martyr (1675–1716)

Martyr

A Bavarian Franciscan, Liberato Weiss volunteered as a missionary to Ethiopia and crossed Egypt, Sudan and the Red Sea on expeditions full of disease, violence and setbacks.

Biography

Appointed apostolic prefect, he persevered together with two other friars in the attempt to announce the Gospel and promote reconciliation with the Ethiopian Church. All three were imprisoned in Gondar, pressured to renounce the Catholic faith, and sentenced to death. Liberato was stoned to death in 1716, faithful to the mission he had freely accepted.
