Lorenzo, Deacon and Martyr (+258)

martyr deacon

Roman deacon who died four days after Pope Sixtus.

Biography

He distributed all the goods of the Christian community among the poor. The Prefect of Rome, upon arresting him, told him: "Christians use gold chalices and patens in their sacrifices. Collect all the treasures of the Church and bring them to me." Lorenzo asked for three days' time, during which time he gathered the poor, the crippled, the beggars, the orphans, widows, the elderly, the mutilated, the blind and the lepers. When the Prefect arrived he told him: "Here are the treasures of the Church. I assure you that they are more valuable than those of the Emperor." He suffered the torment of the fire on some grills. He is the most famous of the Roman martyrs. Let us take care of the true wealth of the Church.
