Marcellus the Centurion (3rd century)
confessor of faith
He is the first and most famous of the saints of this name.
Biography
He was a Roman officer stationed in Tangier, Morocco. That day was the anniversary of Emperor Maximian. “Cursed be this office that forces me to kill and prevents me from being totally at the service of Christ!” Marcellus exclaimed, throwing the belt and sword at his feet in front of the troops. Brought before the prefect Agricolamus, he uttered the same words, and was sentenced to death. When he was going to the torture, he told the emperor's representative. “Thank you, and God bless you, Agricolamus!”
