Mark Križevčanin (1588–1619)
martyr priest
Croatian priest and one of the three martyrs of Košice, Marcos Križevčanin remained with the Catholics entrusted to his care in the midst of a violent religious confrontation.
Biography
Trained in Vienna, Graz and Rome, he was a diocesan priest, seminary director and canon of Esztergom. In 1619 he was captured in Košice together with the Jesuits Melchior Grodziecki and Stephen Pongracz. All three refused to renounce the Catholic faith. After cruel torture, Marcos was assassinated on September 7. His faithfulness showed the courage of the shepherd who does not abandon the flock when danger arrives.
