November 6
María Carmen Lacaba Andía and 13 martyred companions (+1936)
Martyrs
Fourteen Franciscan Conceptionists from various Spanish monasteries were murdered out of hatred for the faith during 1936.
Biography
María Carmen Lacaba Andía, superior of the Madrid monastery, had been a teacher of novices, music and a woman of deep prayer. When persecution forced communities to disperse, several superiors remained to care for elderly and sick sisters. Arrested at different times, they faced death sustained by the contemplative life and forgiveness. María Carmen consoled her companions until the end, reminding them that they were going to meet the Bridegroom.
Practical advice
Stay close to an elderly or sick person today when it is more comfortable to leave.
