María de Jesús López de Rivas (1560–1640)

Carmelite nun

A Spanish barefoot Carmelite and disciple of Saint Teresa of Jesus, María de Jesús López de Rivas was a contemplative of profound discernment and humble service.

Biography

Orphaned by her father and heir to a wealthy family, she left property and marriage plans to enter the Carmel of Toledo at the age of seventeen. Saint Teresa esteemed her and went to her advice. She was mistress of novices and prioress, but for years she endured unjust accusations and deprivation of her positions without losing peace or charity. Rehabilitated, she continued to serve the community into old age.

Practical advice
