Martin of Tours, Bishop (c. 316–397)
Bishop
Martin was a Roman soldier when, at the gate of Amiens, he cut his cloak in two and gave half to a poor man.
Biography
That night he saw Christ wearing the garment. After baptism, Martin left military service, became a monk, and later was chosen Bishop of Tours. He combined prayer and simplicity with energetic pastoral work, evangelizing rural areas, forming clergy, defending the weak, and opposing injustice. The famous cloak became a lasting symbol of recognizing Christ in the person in need.
