There are many legends about this German saint, and there are countless prodigies that he is said to have performed, but the historical documents about him are more laconic and simply say that “Materno, the wise bishop of Cologne, took an active part in the Council of Rome in 313 and in the Council of Arles the following year,” and that “he enjoyed the confidence of the Emperor Constantine.”
