Meinardo
Bishop
An Augustinian canon and first bishop of Livonia, Meinardo was one of the great evangelizers of modern-day Latvia.
Biography
Already at a mature age he left his German monastery and traveled as a merchant chaplain to the Baltic coast. He obtained permission to preach, learned to live with the local people and built a church in Uxkull that became the center of the first stable Christian community. Consecrated bishop, he organized the new diocese and sought collaborators for a mission that exceeded his strength. His patience and pastoral zeal opened a lasting path for the Gospel in that region.
