Narcissus (+212)

Bishop

Saint Narcissus was a centenarian when he became bishop of Jerusalem.

Biography

As such, he presided over the Council of Palestine, where he made the decision to celebrate Easter on the Sunday following the anniversary of the death of Christ. His resurrection was thus commemorated in the same way as the Church of Rome. Three of his parishioners having committed a crime that Narcissus had to punish, they took the lead and leveled an infamous accusation against him: "I want to be burned alive if I lie," said the first. "And I want to become a leper," said the second. “And I am blind,” said the third. The pain of being dishonored led Narcissus to disappear, and he left Jerusalem without leaving a trace. His slanderers were soon struck by the punishment they had called upon them. The first died in the fire of his own house; the second died of leprosy; The third lost his sight due to mourning his loss. When Narcissus returned to his people, they received him full of joy.
