Natalia, San Aurelio and companions (+852)

Martyrs

Such was the persecution suffered by the Christians of Córdoba, Spain, that they had to pretend to be Muslims if they wanted to stay alive.

Biography

This is how Aurelio and his wife Natalia behaved, as did Félix and his wife Liliosa, their cousins. Until the day Aurelio finds a Christian, riding naked on a donkey and with his face turned towards the animal's tail. A public shout preceded him, ridiculing him, and two executioners escorted him, whipping him until he bled. At the sight of that man who allows himself to be flagellated and ridiculed, Aurelio thinks: "Here is a true disciple of Christ, the One who was never ashamed of his love for me, nor refused to suffer to save me." He returns home transformed. From then on, he and his wife will stop pretending and openly practice their faith. Won by their example, Félix and Liliosa, as well as a mendicant monk named Jorge, commit themselves like them. It didn't take long for these five admirable Christian martyrs to be arrested and, some time later, beheaded.

Practical advice

Trusting in the grace of God, overcome human respect with a clean and brave word with external order and internal recollection.
