Nicholas Charnetsky and fellow Ukrainian Greek Catholic martyrs (20th century)
Martyrs
Redemptorist Bishop Nicholas Charnetsky heads the group of Ukrainian Greek Catholic martyrs who remained faithful to Rome during Soviet persecution.
Biography
Bishops, priests, religious men and women and a layman suffered prisons, forced labor camps, torture and death for refusing to abandon their Church or submit it to the regime. Charnetsky spent eleven years imprisoned and, released when he was dying, he continued to direct the underground Church from his bed. They all sustained the faith of their people with patience, forgiveness and ecclesial communion.
