Nicholas Steno, bishop (1638–1686)
Bishop
Scientist, convert and bishop, Nicolás Steno showed that the rigorous search for truth can lead to a deeper surrender to God.
Biography
Danish physician, made decisive discoveries in anatomy and laid the foundations of geology and crystallography. Educated as a Lutheran, he studied the Catholic faith during his travels and was received into the Church in 1667. He later abandoned a brilliant career to be a priest and vicar apostolic in northern Europe. He evangelized with doctrinal clarity, respect for Protestants, personal poverty and long pastoral visits made on foot.
