Constable of Portugal and later a humble Carmelite, Nuño Álvares Pereira went from military command to the hidden service of God and the poor.
Biography
Husband and father, he defended Portuguese independence and stood out for his prudence, courage and devotion to the Eucharist and the Virgin. Once peace was achieved and his wife died, he distributed his assets among former soldiers and the needy. In 1423 he entered as a donated brother into the Carmelite convent that he had founded in Lisbon, without accepting privileges, and organized daily food for the poor.
