February 3
Oscar (801–865)
missionary bishop
Saint Oscar (801-865) He was born near Corbie, in France and was a great missionary who left his abbey to evangelize the Normans of Denmark and Sweden.
Biography
They soon expelled him, and he had better luck in Schleswig-Holstein, until the Danes arrived to conquer the country and destroy all the churches built by him. He ended his life as bishop of Hamburg, Germany, where he managed to establish Christianity. His biographer, successor and disciple, Saint Rembert (February 4), dared to ask him one day about the miracles he performed, and Oscar replied: “If I had the gift of doing miracles, the first thing I would do would be to become a good man.” Apparently, he succeeded.
