March 24
Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez (1917–1980)
Martyr
Archbishop of San Salvador, Óscar Arnulfo Romero defended the dignity of the poor and denounced the violence exercised by political and military forces in his country.
Biography
The murder of Father Rutilio Grande and other pastoral agents led him to exercise his responsibility as pastor more firmly. In his homilies he documented abuses, asked for conversion and supported the victims, without converting the Gospel into partisan ideology. He was murdered while celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980. His death sealed a life dedicated to "feeling with the Church" and giving a voice to those who did not have one.
Practical advice
Listen and accurately document the suffering of an ignored person before speaking publicly in their defense.
