August 9
Oswald (604–642)
Martyr
From the royal family of Nortumbia, England, he embraced Christianity and placed his kingdom under the sign of the cross.
Biography
He made a great effort to Christianize the Anglo-Saxon people, and largely succeeded. He was very humble, humane and generous with the poor, and very pious. He married the daughter of the first Christian king of Wessex and that was like the dawn of a new era. He died young at the hands of the pagan king Penda, and since then he was venerated as a saint and martyr by his people, his cult later spreading throughout Europe.
