Paul the Simple (4th century)
Monk
He was a simple man whose young wife was continually unfaithful to him.
Biography
People told him over and over again, but he didn't believe it, until one day he returned from the field earlier than usual and caught her red-handed. “Take care of her and the children,” he told the accomplice, “because I will never come back here again.” And he went to look for Saint Anthony in the desert of Thebes, in Egypt. “At sixty you are too old to become a monk,” Antonio told him, and he did not want to see him anymore. But Paul stayed there to imitate him. What did Antonio kneel at? Pablo got down on his knees. What did he eat or drink? Pablo did the same, and when Antonio rebuked the demon, Pablo shouted louder than him. After fifteen days, Antonio allowed him to settle in a neighboring grotto and for a year he instructed him in the spiritual life. Paul received so many graces that he became one of the most renowned hermits in all of Egypt.
