Peter of Tarantasia (1102–1174)
missionary bishop
He was born in Saint-Maurice, France, to a family of farmers.
Biography
He became a Cistercian in Bonaval and the strength of his example led all of his people - his parents and three brothers - to also embrace religious life. He was elected abbot of Tamié, in the region of Tarantasia, which is located at the foot of the Savoyard Alps, and ten years later, despite his stubborn resistance, he was appointed bishop of Tarantasia. What characterized this mountainous diocese were the alpine passes, and Pedro, showing a charity full of practical sense, put all his efforts into helping travelers in that region. Knowing his diplomacy, Pope Alexander II entrusted him with several political missions. This monk, at the same time so spiritual and so realistic, was not happy outside his monastery, he frequently visited the Great Charterhouse, and on one occasion he hid for a year in a remote abbey, a ruse that did not help him much, as they returned to take him to his episcopal palace.
Practical advice
By collecting your heart in silence, prudently fulfill a responsibility that others have entrusted to you with external order and internal recollection.
