Peter Donders (1809–1887)
Redemptorist missionary priest
Dutch Redemptorist priest and missionary in Suriname, Pedro Donders served slaves, indigenous people and leprosy patients for decades.
Biography
Of very poor origin, he persevered with difficulty until he was ordained a priest and sent on the mission. In the colony of Batavia he lived among lepers, healed their wounds, celebrated the sacraments and defended their dignity when almost everyone avoided them. He also traveled through the jungle to announce the Gospel to isolated communities. His charity was constant, humble and without fear of contagion.
Practical advice
Approach today, without disgust or distance, a person that others avoid and treat them by name.
