Peter Friedhofen, founder (1819–1860)
Founding religious
Former chimney sweep and founder of the Brothers of Mercy of Mary Help of Christians, Peter Friedhofen put his poverty at the service of the sick and elderly.
Biography
Orphaned since he was a child, he experienced precariousness up close and learned a trade to support himself. He first gathered young people in an apostolic association and, at the age of thirty, he left his job to dedicate himself completely to those in need. In 1850 he founded a congregation of lay brothers to care for the sick in their homes and hospitals. He endured ridicule, lack of resources, and fragile health with serenity and trust in Mary.
Practical advice
Offer an hour of manual work today to a person who is sick, elderly or unable to solve a domestic need alone.
