November 3

Pedro José Almató (+1861)

Martyr

Spanish Dominican, martyred in Sciambara, Japan.

Biography

An episode took place at the city gate that speaks of the saint's strength and bravery: a crucifix had been placed on the ground so that the chained men would step on it as they passed. But Pedro Almató stopped the procession, knelt down and devoutly kissed the image of the crucified man. Neither the beatings, nor the insults, nor the threats made the missionary desist from his attitude, and they did not kill him right there because the law required a trial. They had to remove the cross from the ground and only then did he agree to continue on his way to prison. He was beatified in 1906 and canonized in 1988.
