April 18

Perfect (†850)

confessor of faith

He was born and died in Córdoba, Spain.

Biography

According to Saint Eulogius, who knew him, he served in the parish of San Ascisclo in Córdoba. Like all his brothers, he knew that he was risking his life by trying to convert Muslims. That's why he was suspicious when two of them approached him on the street and asked him what he thought of Jesus and Muhammad. He answered that Jesus, for him, was the Son of God, and God himself, the universal Savior of men. "As for Muhammad - he added - I prefer not to talk about him for fear of disturbing you." "On the contrary," they replied, "we want you to instruct us, speak without fear, we promise not to do you any harm." One day, after answering them about Christianity, he refuses to tell them his opinion about the Koran: “I don't dare so as not to bother you; "Only if you promise me secrecy and security will I satisfy your question." They wished him a good day and let him return home peacefully. They kept their word: that day they did not do him any harm. But like the good casuists that they were, they soon found a way to fix things. They reported him to some friends who were in charge of having him arrested. It did not take long for him to be brought before the court of the cadi, who due to the complaints had to sentence him to death, and on April 18, he was beheaded. other side of the Guadalquivir, in the so-called Field of Truth.
