February 7
Pius IX (1792–1878)
Missionary
Giovanni María Mastai Ferretti ruled the Church as Pius IX for more than thirty-one years, in a time of revolutions and profound political changes.
Biography
He proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, convened the First Vatican Council and promoted missions, seminars and new forms of apostolate. The loss of the Papal States and many misunderstandings painfully marked his pontificate. In the midst of complex historical decisions, he preserved intense piety, trust in Providence and closeness to the poor.
Practical advice
When faced with news that worries you, avoid reacting immediately: pray, verify the facts and then respond with caution.
