Rafael Guízar (+1938)

Missionary founding bishop

He was born in Cotija, Michoacán, Mexico.

Biography

After institutional courses at the Zamora seminary, in 1902 he received priestly ordination. His personal contacts with the clergy and faithful of the diocese, as the bishop's companion on his pastoral visits, were highly celebrated. He was called “the father who moves hearts.” He founded the congregation of Our Lady of Hope and worked as an apostolic missionary in Guatemala, Cuba and Colombia. He was named bishop of Veracruz, where he was greatly persecuted by the local Masonic government and banished from Veracruz. While in Mexico, D.F. He died on June 6, 1938. His remains are venerated in the Jalapa cathedral. John Paul II beatified him on January 29, 1995.
