Rafael Guizar Valencia

Missionary founding bishop

He was born on April 26, 1878 in Cotija, Michoacán.

Biography

He entered the Seminary of the diocese of Zamora in 1894, where he remained until 1901. Some time later, he was commissioned to be the spiritual director of said Seminary and was named Canon of the Cathedral Church. He founded a religious Congregation placed under the care of Our Lady of Hope. Many generations learned Christian doctrine with the catechism that he composed, which endures to this day as a form of faith instruction. He suffered several exiles from his homeland and everywhere he found himself, his love for souls transformed him into a giant of charity. Mons. Rafael Guízar Valencia was not only a tireless missionary, but he was also a good shepherd who was always willing to give his life for his sheep, and he was also a caring Father and benefactor of the poor and helpless. His vision as a pastor allowed him to give capital importance to the training of priests, through the work of the Diocesan Seminary. As Bishop of Veracruz he suffered the ravages of religious persecution in Mexico. Hidden in Mexico City due to said persecution, he dedicated himself to lavishing charity among the faithful and obtaining goods to support his Seminary, which was for him "like the pupil of his eyes." Affected by various illnesses, he was called by the Lord to reward him for his efforts, on June 6, 1938, in Mexico City. His fame for holiness has spread throughout Mexico and to various countries, particularly where he tirelessly missioned: Guatemala, Cuba, Colombia and the southern United States. Many miracles have been achieved through his valuable intercession, particularly amazing healings and help in situations of hardship, especially for the needy. H.H. Pope John Paul II declared Bishop Rafael Guízar Valencia Blessed on January 29, 1995, in Rome, Italy in the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica and gave October 24 as the date of his veneration and particular worship. He was an example of a selfless pastor and hero of Christian virtues.
