Raimundo or Ramón Lull (1235–1316)

Franciscan Tertiary, he was born and died in Mallorca, Spain.

Biography

He is one of the greatest geniuses of the Middle Ages and the most original spirit of his times. His immense production includes works of theology, philosophy, science and pedagogy, philosophical novels, and lyrical and mystical poems of great beauty. He was married and had two children and many assets, but at one point he abandoned everything for the glory of God and the mission of spreading the true faith. The Saracens captured and flogged him numerous times, and at the age of eighty they stoned him to death in the public square of Bejaia, Algeria. He died shortly after on the boat that was taking him to Mallorca.
