August 31
Ramon Nonato (1204–1240)
confessor of faith
The nickname Nonato is explained because Ramón was taken from his mother's womb when his mother was already dead.
Biography
As a young man he entered the Order of Mercy, recently founded by Saint Pedro Nolasco, where he was sent to redeem captives. In the following years he managed to free more than 600 captives in Algiers and Tunisia. Due to lack of money he came to exchange his person and his life for those of a prisoner. In order to prevent him from converting his jailers to the Christian faith, they closed his mouth with a padlock that was only opened at mealtime. He spent the last ten years of his life in Rome, where he received the cardinal's hat a few months before dying of the Black Death. He is a special lawyer for mothers in labor.
