Richard, Bishop (1197–1253)

Bishop

He was born in Worcester, England.

Biography

After recovering the fortune that his parents had lost, Ricardo left for Oxford, where, after completing brilliant studies, he dedicated himself to teaching. To help a bishop friend who was having difficulties with Henry III, he went into exile with him in France and was ordained a priest there. He received the appointment of Bishop of Chichester, despite the opposition of the king who put all possible difficulties in his way until he was threatened with papal excommunication. Ricardo always fought nepotism and simony. Very austere with himself, he squandered everything he had and got it for the poor. He was canonized nine years after his death.
