You knew the goth (†372)
confessor of faith
In the lands north of the Danube, probably present-day Romania, the martyrdom of Sabas, a church reader, took place.
Biography
He should not be considered a luminary since we are told that “he was not eloquent in words,” but his eloquence in inciting everyone to live well resided much more in his example than in his voice. In the course of a chase he was seized and released shortly after. Arrested for the second time, “they took him naked through rough and thorny places, giving him many sticks and lashes,” and his attitude, which was one of meekness and joy, exasperated his executioners, who tortured him until they almost left him for dead. A pious woman untied him at night and took him home, but he again fell into the hands of his pursuers. Then they demanded that he eat delicacies sacrificed to idols, and when Sabas refused, they tied him to a log and threw him into the Buzau River, where he drowned.
