Savior of Horta (1520–1567)
Franciscan religious
He was born to parents of very modest condition, in a Catalan town, in Spain.
Biography
He entered the Franciscan convent of Jesus as a layman, outside the city of Barcelona. He was a gardener, cook, doorman, beggar, and sacristan. Fray Salvador was always a living example of piety and humility, of joy and holy carelessness that sometimes disturbed his superiors, as in the famous miracle of the angels who cooked the best of dinners for him while he was absorbed in prayer. It didn't take long for him to go from convent to convent, because he was troublesome in all the communities, performing stupendous miracles, and where he was there was no order or peace due to the influx of crowds. He was forbidden to perform miracles, but in vain, not because of disobedience, but because that portentous stream was involuntary and uncontrollable. The faithful rioted when he was not allowed to appear in public and he was even prosecuted by the Inquisition, which declared his actions and doctrine to be extremely pure. After his death, the memory of that little friar of joyful miracles, with candor in faith, has come down to us as a testimony of the union with God that plays with the laws of nature.
