John Paul II (1920–2005)
Pope
Karol Józef Wojtyła grew up in Poland amid personal loss, Nazi occupation, and Communist oppression.
Biography
He studied for the priesthood in secret, became Archbishop of Kraków, contributed to the Second Vatican Council, and was elected Pope in 1978. As John Paul II, he traveled throughout the world, defended human dignity and religious freedom, promoted the new evangelization, strengthened young people, and entrusted his ministry to the Virgin Mary. He taught with philosophical depth and pastoral warmth, forgave the man who shot him, and bore illness publicly with faith. His call “Do not be afraid” marked his long pontificate.
Practical advice
Repeat “Do not be afraid” today and face with faith a responsibility you have been avoiding.
