Paul the Apostle
Apostle and martyr
Paul, once a zealous persecutor of Christians, encountered the risen Christ on the road to Damascus and became the great Apostle to the Gentiles.
Biography
Through long missionary journeys, preaching, suffering, and letters, he proclaimed salvation by grace in Jesus Christ and founded Christian communities across the Mediterranean world. His writings form a major part of the New Testament and continue to teach the Church about faith, freedom, charity, the Body of Christ, and life in the Spirit. Tradition holds that he was martyred in Rome.
