Santiago Apostle

martyr apostle

James the Greater was born in Bethsaida; He was the son of Zebedee and Salome and brother of the apostle John.

Biography

For three years he accompanied the Lord, he witnessed in amazement the miracles that Jesus performed; He witnessed his transfiguration on Tabor and heard the voice of the Father coming from the clouds, as he had previously heard the parables and preachings of his Master. He loved the Lord in such a way that he ardently desired that fire would fall from heaven on the Samaritans who did not want to; receive it, but his love was not enlightened, nor was his spirit. He was a man with a candid spirit, faithful, sincere, with a good heart, without falsehood, although angry. The Savior called him and his brother, significantly, "the sons of thunder"; but this nickname was not negative but rather a sign of his affection towards them. He was killed by King Herod around the year 42, beheaded. He was the first of the apostles to share the cup of the Lord. Since the 9th century, his tomb has been venerated in the cathedral of Compostela, Spain, where countless pilgrims have come to this day.
