Seraphine (1432–1478)

Religious

She was born in Urbino, Italy and at the age of 16 she married Alessandro Sforza, Duke of Pesaro, who was a widower much older than her.

Biography

At first everything went well, but when Alessandro went to war, Serafina was unfaithful to him at least twice, and what was worse, she had hatched a plot to kill him when he returned. Realizing this, her husband forced her to lock herself up, and from there he sent her to the convent of Santa Clara where Serafina requested admission as a nun. She spent the rest of her life saintly and was abbess three years before she died. The city of Pesaro adopted her as its patron saint and protector and Pope Benedict XIV elevated this ancient sinner to the altars in 1756.
