August 21
Sidonius Apollinaris (430–480)
Bishop
He was born in Lyon, France, and came from an illustrious family.
Biography
A statue of him was erected in the Forum and he was named patrician. He married Papianila, daughter of Emperor Avitus. For a few years, he enjoyed all the honors and luxuries, in the company of his wife and two children. It all ended when the barbarians attacked the city. At that time, Sidonius had been appointed governor and bishop. After a long siege, the city surrendered and Sidonius, the refined man par excellence, had to feed on herbs and cat meat to survive. But at least he, who until then was rather lukewarm, became an exemplary pastor. He endured a thousand persecutions to preserve his people from the heresies of the invader. His love for the poor was such that he donated his furniture and dishes to those most in need. Apparently, he died prematurely due to many sufferings. Today he is also known as one of the best writers of his time.
